Under the artistic and visionary leadership of Music Director David Danzmayr and Creative Partner, renowned violinist Vadim Gluzman, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra is dedicated to raising the national profile of Columbus through world-class performances and creative approaches to community outreach and education. Founded in 1978, ProMusica drives its mission through collaboration and a commitment to ...artistic excellence.
Comprised of 37 musicians, ProMusica is the resident orchestra of the historic Southern Theatre in downtown Columbus and also reaches audiences through regular performances at other notable venues including the Pontifical College Josephinum and the Worthington United Methodist Church. ProMusica presents an annual outdoor Summer Music Festival, open and free to the public in collaboration with the Franklin Park Conservatory & Botanical Gardens and the Columbus Topiary Park. The orchestra also presents a variety of special events such as the annual Soirée featuring crossover artistry, having recently featured Steep Canyon Rangers, Time For Three, Gabriela Montero, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, and 14-time Grammy winner, Ricky Skaggs.
ProMusica’s diverse programming attracts sold-out performances and is a key part of building our audience. Widely recognized as a national leader in presenting new and contemporary repertoire, ProMusica has commissioned 64 pieces and has presented more than 100 world and regional premieres, by composers including Pulitzer prize winners Kevin Puts and Aaron Jay Kernis, Gabriela Lena Frank, Michael Daugherty, Christopher Theofanidis, as well as composer/performers Lera Auerbach, Conrad Tao, and Joshua Roman. ProMusica also continues an active recordings program with thirteen CDs released to date, including world-premiere performances of ProMusica commissioned works. The “COMPOSER/PERFORMER” project showcases composers of today not only as creators of work, but also as soloists in their own right. ProMusica's new concert series, “NAKED CLASSICS” is hosted by British presenter Paul Rissmann, explores classical music in a fresh, and completely approachable format.
With a strong commitment to learning and education, ProMusica’s community outreach programs impact approximately 16,800 lives each season. Musicians travel to local schools, senior citizens attend live rehearsals, and underserved youth are given life-changing opportunities with the power of music. Programs such as “Play Us Forward” and “Musicians in Schools” offer integrated, in-school based music curriculum, while family concerts provide accessible musical experiences in nurturing neighborhood environments such as the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Our “CODA: Post-concert Conversations” give the opportunity for a direct dialogue between audiences and guest artists –– deepening engagement with the music and performers.
ProMusica has won eight ASCAP awards for Adventurous Programming and has received additional honors, including from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Columbus Jewish Foundation. In June 2015, and again in August 2016, ProMusica was selected as one of the first recipients of The Columbus Performing Arts Prize, an esteemed award designed to celebrate and support the exceptional artistic directors of Columbus’ performing arts organizations and their aspirations for creative growth. In June 2017, ProMusica embarked on its first tour to perform at the North Shore Chamber Music Festival in Chicago.
