ADEA’s activities encompass a wide range of research, advocacy, faculty development, meetings and communications, including the esteemed Journal of Dental Education, as well as our dental school admissions services ADEA AADSAS, ADEA PASS, ADEA DHCAS and ADEA CAAPID.
Our organization is seeking to add an experienced Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO) to our team of high-performing professionals.
In this position, you will lead our efforts to advance public understanding and support of academic dental institutions and their contributions to the nation’s health. You will report directly to the President and CEO and lead a 12-person multi-divisional team that serves as the in-house, organization-wide resource for ADEA’s messaging, branding, communications strategy, publication and product quality control, marketing, and the development of new and innovative tools to reach the organization’s priority audiences. Your role includes oversight of the Association’s earned, paid and social media; strategic communications campaigns; marketing of our events, products, and services; brand and reputation management; digital and print publishing; and membership development and retention efforts.
You will work closely with five other members of the Executive Team who also share the “Chief” designation to provide cross-divisional strategic counsel for communicating our priorities and messaging both externally and internally, and informing consumer marketing strategies to promote interest in the dental professions.
You will use the savvy gained during your years of communications experience with responsibility for all activities related to conceptualizing and implementing communications, marketing and membership strategies by partnering with all units within the organization. Your major responsibilities will include telling the organization’s story to its multiple stakeholders; market development; strategic direction for publications, online communications, membership, promotion and advertising; and hiring and directing the day-to-day activities of the communications, publications, marketing and membership team.
Develops annual department plan that aligns with the organization’s strategic directions.
Manages and coaches the team, motivating employees and utilizing their abilities as well as supporting their professional development and growth to maximize effectiveness.
Directly supervises Director of Publications; Director of Marketing and Communications; and Director of Membership.
Provides sound financial management of the focus area’s budget of approximately $2.5 million, identifying areas for both efficiencies and investment.
Ensures vendors and consultants add value to the Association in a measurable and cost-efficient way.
Oversees development and ensures quality of all communications, including ADEA’s peer-reviewed scholarly journal, six other print publications, seven electronic newsletters, event programs and other collateral for ADEA meetings, and content on adea.org and ADEA GoDental.org.
Develops and leads the implementation of an overall communications strategy for ADEA.
Creates a marketing/public relations strategy to allow the Association to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with key external audiences.
Leads cross-divisional teams to develop messaging and dissemination strategies for key issues facing ADEA and its members.
Actively engages, cultivates and manages media relationships to generate coverage of Association programs, special events, public announcements and other projects.
Serves as in-house communications counsel and works with all divisions on content development and editing needs; conducts messaging and media training for key audiences.
Produces collateral materials to reach ADEA’s audiences using multimedia formats.
Works directly with the President and CEO on key speeches and other public presentations.
Informs marketing strategies to increase interest in the dental profession, targeting students and their influencers.
Oversees the web-based applicant recruitment resource, ADEA GoDental, and ensures consistency and effective marketing efforts to reach this target student population and their health professions advisors.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
A baccalaureate degree in marketing, communications, business or a related field. Graduate degree preferred.
Significant professional experience (fifteen or more years) leading communications and membership activities, either on staff at an association or in an agency or similar setting.
Experience in successfully leading, managing and motivating a team.
Experience in higher education or health care is a plus. Experience promoting peer-reviewed journals is a plus.
Expertise in strategic communications, marketing, message development, targeting audiences, media outreach, social media, electronic communications and publishing.
Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with media outlets and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve placements.
An innovative thinker, with a proven track record of translating strategic thinking into action plans and output.
A track record of growing revenue and profitability of program, product and service lines.
Collaborative leadership style.
Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.

Collaborate with the Director of Publishing to both improve readership and decrease costs associated with the peer-reviewed Journal of Dental Education.
Conduct a formal communications audit of ADEA printed and online products and provide recommendations for continued, improved and discontinued offerings.
Design and implement a new communications tool specifically targeted to Dental School Deans.
