University Communications and Public Affairs (UCPA) is an award-winning, full-service division dedicated to increasing awareness and spreading the word about UC San Diego's impact and mission. Department staff work with campus departments to convey the amazing things UC San Diego students, faculty, staff and alumni are doing and help campus departments implement strategies to reach their audience through events, media relations, printed materials, websites and numerous other avenues. Division reports to the Assistant Chancellor / Chief of Staff within the Chancellor's Office VC Area.
The Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO), reporting to the Assistant Chancellor/Chief of Staff, is a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet and directs UC San Diego's communications program which includes the oversight and management of the campus' full service communications and marketing organization, encompassing Marketing and Communications, Media Relations, Creative Services and Publications, and Social Media Strategy in University Communications and Marketing. Key areas of responsibilities include developing and implementing strategic communications and marketing programs and advising campus leadership on the execution to increase the visibility, outreach and reputation of UC San Diego locally and globally.
The CCMO leads and manages the planning, coordination and implementation of strategic communications and marketing programs to foster increased awareness, understanding and support for UC San Diego's mission, vision, accomplishments and needs among internal and external constituencies. The CCMO serves as the primary communications and marketing officer for UC San Diego and leads and manages a team that provides the full range of communication services, including but not limited to proactive communications, media relations, social media, digital media, marketing, branding, advertising, and the implementation and analysis of tactics needed to execute these strategies.
As CCMO, the incumbent oversees the formulation and implementation of the full range of communications and marketing services for the university's key initiatives and works closely with the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer, Vice Chancellors, Deans and academic leaders. In addition, the CCMO manages important and sensitive issues, provides counsel and support to campus senior leadership in developing key strategies for implementing key decisions and in handling of campus-wide issues and announcements of important projects. The CCMO is the communications point person on crisis communications management for external constituencies.
As member of the Chancellor's Cabinet, the CCMO works closely with the cabinet, deans, leadership and the UC Office of the President in setting overarching strategic priorities and devising communication programs that support university-wide objectives. Provides guidance and oversight of a comprehensive campus-wide review of the organization and the campus' current communication and marketing programs and offices; funding of UC San Diego's communication efforts and vision; and plans and strategies of UC San Diego's units and centers in communications and marketing.
Provides advice and counsel to campus leadership on effective communication strategies to ensure each unit's communications are in alignment with the messaging of the campus as a whole. Develops recommendations on improvements for strategic communications and marketing programs focused on enhancing UC San Diego's visibility and name, and highlighting the accomplishments of UC San Diego locally, nationally and internationally. Represents UC San Diego in campus-wide and system-wide meetings and discussions. Recognized as an influential leader. Makes final decisions for the organization and ensures achievement of goals and objectives.
Identifies objectives, manages very significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with an extremely high degree of autonomy. Accountable for formulating and administering policies and programs for major functions. Operational or program results can affect overall organization-wide performance and reputation. Directs through subordinate managers the development of strategic goals and objectives to achieve accountability and stewardship of university resources in a manner consistent with system-wide objectives and initiatives.
