Departmental Overview
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is charged with providing an equitable opportunity for every applicant to obtain admission to the University. The department must operate in a professional manner that ensures positive staff morale, values hard work and dedication, and in which staff communicate and collaborate effectively. Furthermore it must also present a coordinated effort to standardize procedures, document best practices, offer a variety of methods for professional development, as well as providing first-class customer service.
Responsibilities
- Develops, interprets, and administers an admissions and/or recruitment program.
- Develops and implements the annual marketing and yield plan for undergraduate admissions. Integrates campus goals excellence, diversity and accessibility through marketing, recruitment, and yield strategies.
- Sets priorities, the operational calendar and makes staffing assignments.
- With the AVC/Director and Deputy Director of OUA, oversee development and implementation of campus yield plan for admitted freshman and transfer students.
- The yield plan provides a variety of contacts with students, including strategic mailings, special invitations to visit the campus, phone calls from staff, students, and/or faculty, regional receptions, special Cal Day events, alumni mentoring, etc.
- Develops training programs for staff and volunteers who will participate in customer service and yield activities.
- Ensures quality of campus representation online and to schools and the community through ongoing training and evaluation of all staff responsible for customer service, marketing and yield.
- OUA cultivates and recruits potential students through online marketing and recruitment, individuals, high schools, community colleges and various organizations, through publications, field activities and advising, and e-mail.
- The Associate Director must keep abreast of sources for information about its targeted populations and must remain continually aware of what is important to prospective students and their families and how Berkeley compares with other institutions.
- The incumbent will continually review and oversee the improvement of the OUA website and continually evaluate emerging tools, technology and services for inclusion in the marketing plan.
- The incumbent will work closely with Student Affairs Communication and campus communication leaders.
- Serves as an experienced reader for freshmen and transfer applications.
- As such, serves as a mentor and resource for other readers in both processes, demonstrating the ability to meet the reading goals while balancing other office tasks as needed.
- Responsible for the independent review of both freshmen and transfer applications, meeting reading expectations, measured by both quantity and quality of the reads.
- Provide expertise in the reading process by participating in quality assurance reviews and identifying trends in the overall reading process.
- Provides direction to subordinate professional and support staff.
- Directs the work of multiple professional, communications, and front desk staff.
- Establishes expectations and goals.
- Provides guidance to staff in: establishing workload priorities; human resources issues and motivational and/or performance management.
- Serves as a member of the OUA senior management team which directs all functions of OUA and manages the workings of the office on a daily basis. Contributes to the vision, leadership, planning, human resources management, coordination and implementation of all customer service, marketing and yield activities of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions
- At the direction of the AVC/Director or Deputy Directory, represents the office in conferences, or in interviews with the media, and represents the institution in such a manner as to promote goodwill and public support.
- Coordinate with partners on and off campus to look for overlap or opportunities for partnership.
- Work closely with campus partners to be certain that all marketing and yield events are organized to best meet OUA goals.
- Build and maintain relationships that relate to communications activities.
- Responsible for administering the budget for managed function.
- Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
- Complies with University, campus and departmental policies governing performance appraisal and professional development.
- Provides guidance and assistance to subordinates on most complex issues, elevating to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Director or Deputy Director as needed.
Professional Development:
- Responsible for maintaining a state-of-the-art knowledge of best practices, policies and procedures in the admissions and marketing fields.
- Participate in professional organizations in the UC system and on a regional and national level, where appropriate.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years experience working in college admissions, higher education communications, or a related field.
- Familiarity with the most current technological tools available in marketing and communications and with print publications, video, and on-line trends in higher education recruitment. Must also have knowledge of prospective student database sources, the most effective software/research tools for identifying prospective students, and instruments that analyze the perceptions of admitted students.
- Knowledge and understanding of state and federal affirmative action law, and ability to determine the legality of admission practices and outreach approaches.
- Knowledge of trends and new developments in targeted communities and secondary and post secondary education that may affect application preparation and/or choice.
- Demonstrated experience and cultural sensitivity in working with multicultural student populations.
- Excellent project and program management skills.
- Ability to take initiative and to transform ideas into practical solutions.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Superior judgment and discretion with sensitive and/or confidential issues/information.
- Advanced knowledge of education theory, policy, practice, and evaluation.
- Significant knowledge of the goals and mission of the University as they relate to academic preparation, recruitment, and advanced-standing admission.
- Significant knowledge of Colleges/Universities, Schools and departmental transfer policies.
- Significant knowledge regarding Colleges/Universities and/or schools general education policies and requisite transfer preparation.
- Advanced knowledge of fiscal management policies and practices and University personnel management policies and practices.
- Knowledge of organizational development strategies and practice.
- Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent years/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $95,000.00 - $113,000.00.
